Why I Prioritize Online Privacy in Family Photography

As a Raleigh family photographer and a parent, I know how precious it is to document the fleeting moments of childhood. I also understand the importance of protecting our children’s digital footprints. That’s why I’ve made online privacy a core part of my photography business.

Why Online Privacy for Kids Matters

The internet is constantly evolving, and once a photo is shared publicly, it’s nearly impossible to control where it goes. While social media is a wonderful tool for connection, it’s worth considering how much of our children’s lives we want to make publicly accessible. Choosing to keep kids’ faces off public platforms is a simple and effective way to maintain their privacy while still celebrating family moments.

My Approach to Privacy-Conscious Family Photography

In my photography sessions, I focus on capturing authentic family connections—moments filled with laughter, playfulness, and love. I absolutely take beautiful portraits that include children’s faces, but I choose not to share those images on my website or social media. Instead, I highlight images that preserve the essence of a family’s story without compromising a child’s privacy. (And yes… it kills me sometimes to not be able to post some of my favorites that I take!!)

I ensure my clients are aware of this policy during consultation calls, and it’s clearly outlined on my website and social media bios. Many families appreciate this approach because it allows them to enjoy professional photography without worrying about their child’s images being widely circulated online.

How Families Can Share Their Photos While Prioritizing Privacy

Choosing privacy doesn’t mean you can’t share your family’s special moments. Here are a few ways to be intentional about sharing while maintaining control:

  • Private Sharing Options – Use private family albums, group chats, or secure cloud storage to share images with loved ones.
  • Creative Posting – Consider sharing images that capture special moments without showing full faces—like detail shots, silhouettes, or hands intertwined. The photos below are great examples of seeing a family’s story and dynamic, while not showing details on childrens’ faces.

  • Selective Sharing – If posting publicly, be mindful of settings and platforms that offer audience restrictions.

A Thoughtful Approach to the Digital Age

Every family has its own comfort level when it comes to online sharing, and there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. My goal as a photographer is to help parents make informed decisions that align with their values. By prioritizing privacy in my business, I hope to offer families both beautiful memories and peace of mind.

If you’re looking for a Raleigh family photographer who values both storytelling and privacy, I’d love to connect!
